Agneeswarar Temple Kudalur Madhuranthagam

Kudalur (கூடலூர்) is a small village about 6 kilometers from Madhuranthagam in Kancheepuram district. Villagers have found a ruined temple of Lord Shiva. Reach Foundation has arranged a trip on 17th Feb 2013 to this temple to study its restoration.

Some of the highlights of the temple:

About two feet thick wall should have been there. Though portion above ground level is totally missing, below it seems to be intact.

It should have had nice mandapa in the front with several pillars having inscriptions.

The temple is currently about 3 feet below surrounding ground level. Probably there was some flood/breach of a tank which deposited mud all around.

The inscriptions on the pillar are in a very corroded condition, may belong to Chola period.

One inscription on the wall has ‘Aagneswaramudaya’, by which we can infer that the Siva should be Aagneewarar.
